Gettin’ it done at the Yeti Den

We’ve been working like crazy this week to get things done. First on our list was the kitchen backsplash. I’m happy to report that it is complete! I love natural materials so I chose black slate tiles for the kitchen backsplash. They are 6”x24” tiles that we ordered online. I wanted to keep clean lines and fewer grout lines so we went the 24” length. They worked perfectly and really accentuate the colors in the countertops and cabinets. Natural stone takes a few extra steps like 2 coats of grout release pre installation and a wax buff after installation and grouting. It was totally worth it.

During the kitchen remodel we added under cabinet lighting so the black tiles work. The kitchen doesn’t feel dark, but balanced with the black flooring and cabinet hardware. The stainless steel appliances help reflect light too. Thank goodness for the window above the sink also. We have lots of cans in the kitchen ceiling to help with task lighting too.

The second item we tackled were the heating register vents in the floor. We wanted flush mount register covers that matched the hardwood flooring. We ordered the register covers unfinished and we stained and sealed them to match. I love the clean look of them! The stain was a process. We had a matching stain mixed which wasn’t perfect so we had a 3 part process with 2 different colors. Then we used a flooring sealer to protect them. There were 6 total. We got them pretty close.

Next we are tackling the stair risers and treads. There are 14 risers and treads to finish. We will be using the same 3 part process to stain them also. Wish us luck that they turn out as good as the vent covers!
