Keeping busy

A lot has happened since my last post. We are finally all under the same roof! We moved Jim’s mom up to Pinedale on the 23rd. It was a long day in the cold, with wind, and slippery sidewalks and parking lots. It is nice not to have to travel back and forth the 100 miles between Rock Springs and Pinedale, especially with the winter weather. It’s also nice to have all of our stuff in one place!

We didn’t get everything done that we wanted to before we brought her up, but have made some good progress.

Pantry
The new pantry used to be the small laundry room. We knew that our front load washer and dryer would not fit into the space as it was, they are just too big. There were lots of ideas thrown around, but no matter how we arranged it, it still would have felt cramped. So it was decided that the room would become a pantry with a freezer in it and the washer and dryer would go into the mud room. This would require moving plumbing and electrical. Jim’s least favorite thing is plumbing! With some advice from the plumber who is working on the new gas lines and water heater, we came up with a plan, and it worked!

It turned out pretty! New tile, cabinets are a mix of new and recycled from the old laundry room and kitchen, new cabinet hardware, black walnut butcher block counter top, new paint, and new light fixture. Sadly, the freezer is still headed our way. We are hoping it will be delivered sometime after December 5th. The store was pretty great about the delay and gave me free shipping for my troubles. Not too bad considering the are driving over 100 miles to get it to me.

Laundry room/mud room
Lessons learned with this room- plumbing (even drain lines need to be away from exterior walls.) It gets so cold that even the drain lines will freeze! A big thank you to Brett, our plumber, for his advise on this.

Buy whatever plumbing parts you need or think you will need ahead of time. There are some things you just can’t get here so the internet becomes your go to shopping source. Thank goodness for 2 day shipping!

The mud room was just a big empty space. The previous owners had all kinds of hooks on the walls in no particular pattern. So we took them all down, ripped open the wall where the washer and dryer were going and jumped into plumbing and electrical. This took awhile, but we got it done. We stacked the washer and dryer and reused cabinets we took out of the kitchen on either side. It’s still a work in progress, but it’s coming along nicely!

Not too bad! New tile (still need to finish the bullnose tiles), black walnut butcher block countertops, washer and dryer enclosure with shelving, drying rack, new cabinet hardware, and new paint.

I’m still working on the mud room side which will have hooks, shelving, seating, and boot boxes.

Set backs

We’ve been without a kitchen for a while now. The cabinets were on the way when the State decided to close the roads due to the weather. It happens this time of year. The plan was to have the cabinets here and have at least the wall oven installed before Thanksgiving. Let’s just say that Thanksgiving was a little different this year. The hope is to have the cabinets delivered this week and we can start putting it back together. Fingers crossed that the Wyoming weather cooperates!

Weather
We had a week of snow here and we’ve already learned that we want a snow blower! The novelty of shoveling snow wore off quickly! I see a purchase happening this week.

I’ll keep y’all posted on further progress and set backs. We still love our cabin on the hill, even with all it’s quirks and the work ahead of us. The views, wildlife, and friendly people make it worth it!
