Time to get creative!

There are a few things we look for in a house to remodel: structurally sound, up to date electrical, plumbing, and HVAC systems, layout, spaces for storage, and most important the vibe! How we feel in the space is important. We’ve walked into homes and immediately felt like we needed to turn around and go back out the door. We’ve also been in places that made us feel okay or maybe nothing at all. We know we have a winner when we feel at home and excited about a house. That’s how the cabin makes me feel. There is a peace there that I really enjoy, even though I know there is a lot to do to remodel the house to make it ours. Knowing that the house feels good is what will help us get through the rough days of remodeling ahead!

We are facing some challenges with this remodel because of it’s location. Pinedale is a little town of just over 2000 people situated 77 miles from Jackson, Wyoming and about 100 miles from Rock Springs, Wyoming. Our supply resources are limited and the costs are increased because of the location. Luckily, we are already experts at shopping online for remodeling materials. The ability to shop over the internet has been a real blessing for us in this endeavor. It’s also been a great resource for ideas!

We began planning the remodel pretty much once we made an offer. There are some rules that we have set for ourselves:

Make a budget and stay as close to budget as possible
Use the existing wall layout (keep demo to a minimum)
Be true to the style of the home (contemporary cabin)
Be creative in the use of space
Keep waste to a minimum
Take breaks when needed

With our rules in place we started our process by choosing the paint colors. Paint is an easy and fairly inexpensive way to make a big impact. The paint colors set the tone for the whole house. For this house the interior colors needed to be fresh, clean, and soothing. The grays speak to me to achieve this goal. With our color pallet in mind we gathered sample color chips and took them up to the house. The winners so far are:

Chic gray for the walls, Elemental gray for the accent walls, and Weathered white for trim work.

We’ve used the white color before and love the softness of the color. It also will allow us to bring white into areas like cabinetry in the mud room or built in closet organization. The white will keep things bright and clean looking and accent the hickory cabinets we are keeping.

The grays are new to us so we will buy a tester can and test them on the walls just to make sure they work. The grays look nice next to the wood doors and cabinets and adds some interest to the now white walls. I’m looking forward to seeing these colors on the walls.

Our next area to tackle was flooring. Jim likes carpet and I don’t. For him it’s about the feel of the carpet under his feet. For me it’s about all the nasty dirt that works it’s way under the carpet. It’s gross. So we compromised and will be putting carpet in the bedrooms. The bedrooms aren’t high traffic areas so the dirt will be minimal and Jim can have something soft under his feet. We picked a middle quality carpet called Sage view. It’s a multi colored carpet with grays in it and it is super soft.
Sorry I don’t have a picture to post of it.

The great room, hallways, dining room, and loft office will all be hardwood flooring. For those of us
with allergies the hardwoods are a blessing. The dirt and dust stays on top of the flooring and is easily swept or vacuumed up.

We looked at vinyl flooring, laminate flooring, engineered wood flooring and real wood flooring. I’m partial to the real wood flooring. We’ve put it in all our houses and have loved the warmth that it brings. We don’t have little kids or pets to scratch it and it can be refinished if there is damage. It’s not for everyone I know, but I love it. We did a lot of shopping around to find a budget friendly hardwood floor. Jim found our choice on the internet, it’s called Maison French Oak.

To save money we will be installing it ourselves. It’s a big job, but the visual impact will be stunning.

The last of the flooring will be porcelain tile in the entry ways, bathrooms, kitchen, and mud room. Porcelain is a great tile for its strength and durability. There are so many colors and textures to choose from. We wanted something slate-like to keep with the rustic contemporary cabin feel. We ended up choosing a stone-like tile with slate coloring. It will really set off the hickory cabinets and gives a neutral color tone for the gray walls to accent. It also looks great with the kitchen countertops we chose and the backsplash.

That’s the update on the walls and floors for the remodel. It will be exciting to see the changes to the house when everything is installed. We’ll post pictures of the finished products as we get them done!
