It’s starting to feel like home

I can’t believe it’s been over a month since my last post! Time flies when you are focused on completing projects. Some of the latest projects were big and took time to complete and some are mostly done, but the usual delays keep them from completion.

Here’s what’s new:

Completed projects
Pot racks installed on the kitchen

Cookbook racks installed
Kitchen island built and in use

Projects almost done
Fireplace

We ordered large wood corbels to place beneath the mantle, but one came damaged and the other one did not look good. So we ordered new ones and returned the not so great ones. Hopefully they will be delivered soon!

Hardwood floor installation
I LOVE these floors! They are real hardwood floor boards. We chose oak with a French maison stain.  We have finished installing the boards on the main floor and will tackle the loft office area next. We still need to stain the wood register covers and the stair treads and risers to match. That will take some time since we have to cut each riser and tread to size, stain them and varnish them. It takes a while for things to dry around here! It’s been quite a project to lay the flooring. We have about 1400 sq ft of hardwood flooring in the cabin, that’s a lot of work!

What’s next

We received the slate for the backsplash on Thursday (after shipping and delivery delays) and are ready to tackle the installation tomorrow. I think it’s the last piece in the kitchen! I’m so looking forward to having the kitchen done.
Side note: the missing dishwasher toe kick is still not here and the broken microwave is still ongoing. It’s been a lesson in patience with the supplier. Warranty issues seem to take a long time to deal with.

I’m going to test painting the interior doors. They are real wood which is nice, but over time wood doors split and crack. Filling them with wood putty doesn’t look so great, so I’ll need to repair them, prime them, and paint them. I chose a black paint color called Satin Black. It has a gray tint to it so the black isn’t too harsh. I like softer black colors. Fingers crossed it looks good!

Then we are going after the master bathroom. The only thing staying in the bathroom is the cabinets! New flooring, tile, shower update, new freestanding tub, toilet, light fixtures, countertops, mirrors, sinks and faucets. I can’t wait for the tub!

It’s been a crazy ride getting the cabin to reflect our style, but it’s starting to come together. I’m not much of a rustic decor kinda gal. The fireplace is about as rustic as I get. I’m more of a contemporary chalet or modern mountain cabin kinda gal. It’s comfortable and cozy and that’s what I’m aiming for.

Fun fact
People around these parts name their ranches and cabins. Some have their names as part of the name like Smith Ranch, others choose a landmark to put in the name like Fremont Peak Cabin, and others choose something that is unique. We went the unique route. We named the cabin The Yeti Den. If you didn’t know Yeti is Jim’s nickname. With all the snow and freezing cold it just seemed a natural choice. I need to design a sign to hang at the end of the driveway, it’s a thing here. It will be a fun project with metal and wood.

Well that’s the latest from the Yeti Den!
